Have you found a turtle?

Here's what you should do:

  • Move the turtle above the high tide line, but DO NOT put it back in the water

  • Pick the sea turtle up by its shell; try to keep it flat. If needed, have someone help you

  • Cover it with seaweed so that it is not as exposed to the cold

  • Put a marker, such as a large stick, near the turtle. Make sure you do not remove it off the beach

  • As soon as you can, call Mass Audubon: 508-349-2615

Information to give when you call:

  • Location; town and name of beach

  • A detailed description of where on the beach you found it (was it to the left or right of the entrance, 1/2 mile away, etc.)

  • What you used to mark the sea turtle with

  • Date and time

  • Tide, wind direction, etc.

  • If it's after hours, leave a message on extension 104

When would you typically find a turtle?

  • Most sea turtles will be found from mid October through December

  • Midday through late afternoon/evening is the optimal time to find them
